Counter-UAS (Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems) are technologies used to detect, track, identify and eliminate unauthorized or hostile drones. As small UAV threats rapidly increase in both military and civilian environments, protecting airspace, infrastructure and personnel has become essential. Modern Counter-UAS solutions combine radar, RF detection, EO cameras, thermal imaging and laser systems to reliably detect small and low-flying targets. Increasingly important is the elimination phase, where cost-effective hard-kill interception is performed by counter-drones guided by EO/IR sensors. Our super SWaP-C thermal camera module with target lock and tracking capability can function as infrared seekers, enabling autonomous guidance of one drone to intercept another with high precision.

Detection & Identification

Early warning and reliable identification of drone threats is achieved through a combination of radar, RF sensing and high-performance EO/IR systems. Ground-based EO/IR gimbal payloads equipped with LWIR and especially MWIR thermal cameras with ultra long-range optics (e.g. 1000 mm f/4.0) enable detection of small UAV targets at extended distances. Passive thermal sensing allows reliable operation day and night, including in low visibility conditions and environments where radar or GNSS signals may be limited.

Tracking & Classification

Stabilized EO/IR gimbal payloads provide continuous tracking of detected drone threats using thermal and daylight sensors combined with automatic AI-powered target tracking. Integration of Laser Range Finder (LRF) enables precise distance measurement, improving target localization and tracking accuracy. Multi-sensor fusion of EO, IR and ranging data supports reliable classification of UAVs and helps distinguish drones from birds or other airborne objects, ensuring stable tracking even in complex environments.

Neutralization & Interception

Modern Counter-UAS solutions combine soft-kill methods (RF or GNSS disruption) with increasingly common hard-kill interception, where interceptor drones physically neutralize hostile UAVs. In these applications, compact SWaP-C optimized thermal camera module can act as infrared seekers, enabling reliable target detection, lock and tracking. Stabilized thermal imaging combined with accurate ranging significantly improves interception precision against small, fast-moving drone threats.
